“Chino, come here”

St. Maarten – Two youngsters who undertook a failed robbery attempt on the owners of the Daily Supermarket in Simpson Bay on April 19, were sentenced to 22 months imprisonment in the Court in First Instance yesterday. The third suspect, a 17-year-old who acted as the driver of the getaway car, received a suspended sentence and has to do 240 hours of community service.

Etienne Jose Carty, 20, told his friends Martin Teekah, 19, and Alli Ameer, 17, on the night of the robbery-attempt that he needed money “to pay his water bill.”
Carty and Teekah went to the supermarket around closing time, pretending that they wanted to buy a couple of beers but when the owner did not let them in, they picked up a pellet gun from their car and decided to rob him.
When the owner and his wife left the store via the back door they were confronted with Carty and Teekah; one of them pointed the pellet gun at the owner, after telling him, “Chino, come here, come here.”
But the supermarket owner ran away from the would-be robbers and screamed for help. The two youngsters fled the scene. A couple of hours later police stopped their car near the Daily Extra supermarket.

The court granted Teekah and Carty a 2-month sentence reduction for time they spent too long in a police cell. Ameer was sentenced to 402 days imprisonment, of which 365 days are suspended. He’s already spent the remaining time behind bars in preventive custody. Ameer also has to perform 240 hours of community service.
