Young talent emerges in school soccer tournament

St. Maarten – It did not matter if they were following a family tradition or were just emulating members on their respective communities or stars on television, all that mattered was that they all had a degree of raw talent. The primary and secondary school soccer competition that began last Saturday was the platform for professionalism.
The one week delay for the start of the season due to passing showers had little or no effect on the young players who were obviously eager to compete against their peers when the battle of the primary schools kicked off under good weather conditions.
However, controlling the grass roots players who were competing for the first time was not exactly a walk in the park for those that were responsible for running some of the matches. Because of that, coaches were allowed to walk onto the field to offer technical advise where it was necessary, but that was not needed in the competition involving the more seasoned players.
In an all Sr Magda F.C affair in the 6-8 age brackets, the Greenboys and Rockstars played to a 1-1 draw much to the delight of the numerous socca moms and socca dads present. After a not so executed first half, Jemuel Galimon, literally brought the crowd to their feet after scoring the first goal for the Rockstars and the team proceeded to celebrate just like the professionals. However, Elan Davelaar was able to score the equalizer to make it a balanced encounter.
In the 9-11 age brackets, the Oranje school and Sr Magda United Stars played an exhibition game which ended with a 0-3 score in favor of the Sr Magda United Stars after a scoreless first half. Jeahru Richardson netted a double and Gabriel de Vries chipped in with one in a winning effort.
The Christian Hillside school made light work of the SR Magda FC in a one sided game which ended in 6-0 with four of those goals scoring in the 1st half. However, at the end of the game, it was discovered that the winning team played with 11 players and not the 9 as was specified by the organizers. However, that game was also an exhibition encounter.
The results of the other matches played during the morning and those from the afternoon games among the secondary schools were not readily available up to press time.
