St. Maarten- A group of 24 basketball players in the 17 and under age bracket are set become the first group from country St. Maarten to attend the Philadelphia76ers Summer Camp. The training camp begins July 16 and runs through July 21. The group, which also includes three coaches and two delegation leaders, leaves today.

President of the St Maarten Youth Beat Foundation Emmanuel York said the trip is historical and give the players “an opportunity to rise to the occasion” in six days of intensive of training.

“This is the first time that we have accepted that offer to attend the clinics and they are all excited. They are looking forward to the clinics and it is my hope that they will all make us proud. The players are divided into three specific groups – advanced, intermediate and beginners. We selected a variety of players because we did not know what to expect when we got there,” York said.

The players used their initiative to raise the much needed cash by organizing a series of fundraising efforts. Their first fundraiser was in February.

“We also approached several companies and individuals who were happy to assist in the cause and we were able to accomplish that task,” York said.

The players have been presented with the specific guidelines that they must adhere to while attending the camp. The delegation will return on July 24.
