St. Maarten – The Maritime School of the West Indies has teamed up with the St. Maarten Yacht Club to host two “Maritime Experience Days” on board the square rigged Dutch tall ship “Tres Hombres” on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 and Thursday, February 9, 2012. The two days are co-sponsored by the Caribbean Sail Training Association.

The 32 meter (90 ft) long vessel, which has been in service since 2009, will come through the Simpson Bay Bridge on February 7 and moor alongside the St. Maarten Yacht Club dock. The vessel will then be opened for visits by members of the club, invited guests and the media from 10:00 am on February 8 and for selected schools from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The St. Maarten Yacht Club will also organize a raffle so that people can buy tickets to win one of the six available spaces on board to sail a day with the Tres Hombres and experience square rigged sailing first hand. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales will go to the vessel to pay for costs. The other fifty percent will go to the yacht club’s youth sailing program.
Tres Hombres has a cargo capacity of 35 tons and accommodates five crew members and 10 trainees.

Students on the French side will have a similar experience between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on January 9 when the Maritime School of the West Indies organizes a maritime experience day. The students who participate will visit the Eendracht while it is moored at Galisbay in Marigot.
