Witu General membership meeting postponed

St. Maarten -A general membership meeting of the Witu, originally carded for February, has been postponed to March, president of Witu Claire Elshot explained.

According to Elshot the board is currently in the process of preparing its financial report and its secretarial report, which must be added to the agenda of the general membership meeting. She envisions this being complete by March, at which time the announcement will be made to call the union’s membership to a meeting.

The focus of the meeting is to discuss a number of issues pertinent to teachers and of concern to the union, including the salary scales structure and some deductions that the school boards are demanding from the teachers. Elshot said that the new demands on the teachers are based on article 24 of the LMA which regulates the teacher’s salaries and scales.

Teachers were to be moved up in the salary structure in either scale A or B and move up in what was described as steps, so as to follow a career line. However, according to Elshot since the structure changed there appears to be no interest from the powers that be in ensuring that the teachers were placed in the proper position in the scale.

The union boss noted that there has been no compensation in the cost of living adjustments since 2012 and as a result there is no mobility for the teachers. Because of this and a number of other pressing concerns the teachers union believes that they have been left with little choice than to call their general membership in to a meeting.
