St. Maarten —The board of the Witu will meet this Thursday at 3:30pm to discuss and take decisions on a number of pertinent issues including issues reviewed and decided upon at the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) conference in Belize late last year. The meeting will be held at the Union’s office in Madame Estate.

President of the Witu Claire Elshot, was among persons in attendance at the CUT conference and Executive meeting on behalf of the Witu held under the theme “Embracing opportunities in education.” On the heels of this meeting she explained that a number of presentations were given which the respective unions must take back to their board for discussions. Among these are plans to have the CXC board pay teachers for marking the exams, participation in the CARIFTA games, the establishing of a national teachers council and a presentation from an attorney on the rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender teachers and students.

The local group advocating for the rights of the LGBT community—SAFE– has since expressed their willingness to work in conjunction with the Witu to host workshops etc to educate the population on LGBT rights. Elshot said this will be discussed with the board during Thursday’s meeting and a decision will be taken as to how the subject will be approached.

At Thursday’s board meeting the union leader and her deputy will impart to the board other areas of interest from the CUT conference as well as discuss other pressing union business.
