St. Maarten – Windward Islands Airways International (Winair) will focus on thanking it customers and giving special recognition to Saba and St. Eustatius when it celebrates its 50th Anniversary on August 25. Winair was established in 1961 by Georges Greaux, Faustin Ledee and Chester Wathey with the aim of connecting St. Maarten to St. Barths and St. Eustatius. The current owner is Country St. Maarten and the Netherlands.
“We recognize that without our dedicated and committed customers, it would have been impossible to celebrate this great milestone. As a result, we are committed to offering airfare specials which will be available on our website, Facebook page, radio stations and news papers throughout the oncoming weeks and months. A hearty thank you from the management and staff at WINAIR, for remaining loyal to us throughout the years. We look forward to having you celebrate our 50th Anniversary with us,” the airline’s Managing Director Edwin Hodge said.
“This year’s celebration will also include giving special recognition to the Islands of Saba and St. Eustatius as they played a vital role in the airline’s history and survival over the past 50 years,” Hodge also stated.

In its 50 year history the airline has expanded to serve over 15 Caribbean destinations and now ranks among the region’s safest and oldest airlines. The half century has included contending with high fuel prices, strict aviation regulations, increase in operational costs. All of these items have affected the airline’s financial position, but they’ve moved past them and continued to contribute to the economic development of St. Maarten and the surrounding islands. Despite the challenges the airline’s shareholders and management team “look forward to a more positive future.”
The anniversary celebrations will begin with a church service on August 20. There will also be a Walkathon on September 3. The proceeds from this event will be donated to community projects.
