Wiels murder suspect Fonseca released

POSTED: 08/10/14 6:08 PM

WILLEMSTAD – Burney “Nini” Fonseca, a suspect in the Helmin Wiels murder trial, has been released under strict conditions, the Curacao Chronicle reported yesterday. The judge stressed, however, that he is still a suspect. He must turn in his passport. He cannot leave the island and must always be available to the justice authorities. The judge argued that he has been in detention since last year and his case should have been heard yesterday. There is no exact date when his case will be presented before the judge again. The request made by the public prosecutor has been honored, though and the case has been postponed.

Judge Van Dam van Isselt stated: “Both interests weigh heavily in Fonseca’s case, the interest of the investigation team as of the defendant. The defendant has been under arrest since September 20, 2013, and the public prosecution cannot indicate when the investigation will finish. This is why the interest of the defendant weighs heavier now.”

Nini is a suspect in both the Magnus and Maximus cases. According to the public prosecutor, Nini is the mediator between those who executed the murder and the intellectual authors of the murder of the late political leader and Member of Parliament, Helmin Wiels.

The Magnus case was adjourned till 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon when the defendants Kuwas (Monster), Damascus, and Pieter will have the opportunity to give their final word before the judge gives his sentence on August 29 this year.

According to the Prosecutor, there is sufficient evidence that Nini acted as an intermediary between those who committed the murder of politician Helmin Wiels and the intellectual perpetrators who wanted him dead.

The prosecutor mentioned as evidence several statements from witnesses, dozens of text messages and personal contacts in the office of a suspect in the case Maximus, former Finance Minister George Jamaloodin. All this, according to the public prosecutor, happened during the period from January 2013 to May 4, 2013. On May 4, all contacts stopped and on May 5, 2013, Helmin Wiels was murdered in cold blood.
