St. Maarten – The Windward Islands Civil Servants Union/Private Sector Union (Wicsu/PSU) says Finance Minister Roland Tuitt assured them in a meeting on June 19 that the cost of living adjustment for 2010 will be paid at the end of July. The minister made the announcement at a meeting requested by the union to gain clarity on the payment and other matters like claims that were left outstanding by the now defunct government of the Netherlands Antilles.
According to a release Tuitt confirmed that the 17 million guilder payout will be made at the end of July because the budget needs to be amended to give legal basis for making the payment and because lumping it together with vacation allowance at the end of June would have resulted in a much higher tax deduction.
“We at the Wicsu/PSU are encouraged by the openness and willingness of the Minister to share information and pledge our continued cooperation in the interest of our members; we also hope that other unions and like organizations will join us in representing our members’ interests to the best of our ability,” a release from the Wicsu/PSU states.
