St. Maarten – Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams will head a delegation to the Caribbean Oversees Countries and Territories conference to be hosted in Curacao on April 26. St. Maarten, as a member of the Oversees Countries and Territories Association (OCTA), will work along with other countries in drafting a Memorandum of Understanding to foster closer ties between the regional OCTs.
The OCTs are non-European countries and territories that have special relations with Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. They are associated with the European Community with a view to promoting their economic and social development and establishing close economic relations between them and the Community as a whole.
Prime Minister Wescot-Williams said that “while there is an overarching OCTA, of which St. Maarten forms part, especially in the recent past, the need for closer collaboration has been felt.”
There are approximately 25 OCTs in total that are constitutionally linked to a member state without being part of the European Community.
