St. Maarten – Organizers of the first Golden Stars Karaoke Festival was a “great success.” Over 425 people turned out for the event, which was held at Celebration Palace on October 22. Some of the feature performers were Anlucinda Mijdt, Richard Gibson Sr., Godwin Gram and Josianne Fleming.
Lino Hughes opened the show with his famous St. Maarten is my Home. Members of the audience joined in the singing. Hughes returned later to close the show. He was followed by Berthe Artsen who sang Jim Reeves’ I come to the garden alone.
Artsen was one of two residents of the St. Martin Home who participated in the show. The other person was Raymond Liburd, who performed “I’ll be there before the next tear drop falls”. Both were cheered on by a delegation of 20 seniors from the St. Martin Home.
Judge Wilfred Manning, who recently celebrated his 51st wedding anniversary, dedicated his performance of Nat King Cole’s “When I fall in love it will be forever” to his wife. The crowd got carried away with Ruwi Bezina’s dramatic performance of Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore”. Bobby Otley came decked out and had the audience screeching like Beatles fans as he sang Elvis Presley’s “He got to go”. Marelva Simon delivered a star performance of Shirley Bassey’s “Never, never, never”. She’d return later to sing it in Papiamentu. Many of the attendees sang along, even if they were unfamiliar with the language.
The program was extended during the 40 minute intermission to allow performances from, amongst others, Bienvenido Richardson, Ketura Brown and Cedric Rey. The entire show lasted three and half hours and had to be stopped at 11:30 p.m. Before the close the organizers raffled off door prizes like a Caribbean cruise, a sandwich grill, an I-pad, and I-phone and dinners for two.
“The Aging with Grace Foundation wishes to thank all sponsors, all who attended the show and particularly all golden stars who made the show such a resounding success,” the organizers stated in a release.
