St. Maarten – Coming Saturday a walk and bikeathon will be organized to commemorate World Diabetes Day which will be held worldwide tomorrow.

Participants are asked to come dressed in blue and join the organizers for the walk and bikeathon that will kick-off from Le Grand Marché on Bush Road at 6.00 a.m. under the banner, ‘Walk for Health.’

There are two routes; the walking route starts from Le Grand Marché into Phillipsburg towards Illidge road onto Bush road and ends back at the supermarket. The bikeathon also starts at Le Grand Marché and goes into Phillipsburg, Sucker Garden, Illidge Road, Coralita and via the L.B. Scott Road back to the supermarket.

The Diabetes Foundation has tickets on sale for $10 which includes a T-shirt, a healthy sandwich and orange/bush tea.

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes.  This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention.  Almost 80 per cent of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
