VOOC announces 2013 theme: Listen to the Silent Cries of our Children

POSTED: 01/3/13 3:56 PM

St. Maarten -The youth based organization the Voice of Our Children announced its theme for the upcoming year as Listen to the Silent Cries of our Children in its ongoing endeavour to stimulate the minds of local youth through the spoken word.

“This theme was chosen because our children are crying out silently against so much verbal and physical abuse,” VOOC President Sharmaine Olivacce said.

She noted the growing trend of youngsters hurting themselves by cutting their wrist. “I understood that when this is done they don’t feel, so they do it not to feel pain or sadness. Parents are neglecting their children. A lot of children don’t have enough to eat; some don’t receive hugs, kisses nor hear I love you. A lot of children don’t speak out, but you can see it by the way they speak or act and when you look into their eyes.”
For these reasons the community should listen to the silent cries of our children, Olivacce said.

Based on the fundamental rights of the child, when parents are unable to take care of their children, the government has the right to step in and assist.

VOOC hosts a weekly radio programme and television news broadcast, sponsored by several local businesses. Its radio program is hosted by youngsters on PJD2 on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. and on the French-side radio station SOS 95.9 FM on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.

VOOC’s television news broadcast is aired on Cable TV Channel 15 on Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and on the French-side television station MSR on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 p.m.
