St.maarten—The car dealership FW Vlaun and Sons which seemed to be a permanent fixture on the landscape of St. Maarten has changed ownership. Managing Director Eric Vlaun told this newspaper that the company has been sold to businessmen from Dominica.

Vlaun is the dealer for Mitsubishi and Toyota; the director said he would issue a press release about the latest development as soon as possible.

Most of the employees who have had more than 18 years of service have been terminated and they are expected to receive their severance pay within a week. Some of the former employees said that they were told about the demise of the company about two weeks ago and they were surprised that the apparent sale went through so soon. They have also expressed mixed feelings about the sale since they will be out of a job.

FW Vlaun and Sons has been a house hold name on the island for more than sixty years. The company started under the late Charles Vlaun, one of the pioneers of the local car business.
