Van der Sloot stabbed in prison

POSTED: 11/5/14 9:38 AM

LIMA – Joran van der Sloot has been stabbed by fellow inmates in the Peruvian Challapalca prison, the Telegraaf reported yesterday. Van der Sloot’s attorney Máximo Altez confirmed the stabbing and said that his client is seriously injured. He has been transferred from his cell to the prison’s infirmary.

Altez said that the inmates want to achieve that the authorities close down the prison. Van der Sloot is the only foreigner in Challapalca and his death would cause a scandal.

The Telegraaf reported that Van der Sloot was stabbed twice – once in his shoulder and once in his waist. “The wounds are at least two centimeter deep,” the attorney said. The wounds have been stitched, but the 27-year-old Van der Sloot is in great pain. His wife Leidy visited the prison and smuggled a polo shirt out that was covered in blood.

A public prosecutor is going to investigate the claim.

Van der Sloot was recently transferred to the notorious Challapalca prison. He objected to the transfer and went on hunger strike. At the end of last month, Altez said that prison guards are ill-treating his client.

Challapalca is located at an altitude of 5,000 meter in the border area between Peru and Bolivia. Human rights groups want the prison to close, amongst others because of the extreme weather conditions. At night temperatures could go down to minus 20 degrees Celsius.  The prison does not have a heating system.

Van der Sloot is serving a prison sentence of 28 years for the murder of the Peruvian student Stephany Flores in 2010. He became a household name after the disappearance in Aruba of Alabama teenager Natalie Holloway on May 30, 2005, but he has never been charged or sentenced in this case. The body of Holloway was never found.
