GREAT BAY – The Division for Education Research Policy and Innovations (DERPI) is running a tailor made mentorship training at the St. Maarten Vocational Training School. The workshop is being facilitated by Director of the Victorious Living Foundation (VLF) Erna Mae Francis based on a request the school submitted to the Department at the end of the 2010/2011 school year.

The training uses a holistic approach that tackles the concept of mentorship from different angles. The first of several training sessions – a mentorship symposium – was held in August. The school then moved into a nine week curriculum which focuses on, amongst other things, team spirit. The last session for 2011 in this course was held on December 14. Starting in January 2012 there will be bi-monthly training sessions on, amongst others, confidentiality, communication and youth empowerment.

“Derpi is pleased to be able to provide such an in depth mentorship training and looking forward to seeing the results. If this holistic approach proves successful, this pilot training could be implemented in other PSVE schools in an effort to boost the mentoring aspect of the school system,” a release issued on Monday stated.

“Derpi would like to thank the St. Maarten Vocational Training School for their initiative spirit in seeking ways to tackle issues within their school, the Victorious Living Foundation for accepting the opportunity to share the vast amount of knowledge they have garnered throughout the years and Usona for funding this project,” the release concluded.
