St. Maarten – The United People’s party is “eagerly awaiting” the report from the government accountant bureau Soab about the Taxand-led tax reform project, MP Gracita Arrindell said in a press statement.
The MP notes that the Soab-report was ready “sometime in November 2012” and that it has not been presented in the Council of Ministers yet. The report deals with the procedures former Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto used when he handled the project.

“What is the hold up? The Minister had the entire month of December to submit the findings to the Council and that did not happen,” Arrindell stated adding that Finance Minister Tuitt, since he cancelled the project in May or June of last year, had promised to make results known on a monthly basis. “Minister Tuitt mentioned in his last meeting with parliament that the Council still had to review the report. How thick is this report that it is taking so long?”

Arrindell stated that it is important for Sint Maarten “to move forward post haste in getting our new tax structure in place. The longer the delay, the less revenue, including possible new to be attracted revenue for government to fund programs and projects for our citizens.”
