St. Maarten —All five members of the Central Voting Bureau approved the validity of the political parties contesting the upcoming Parliamentary elections slated for this coming August. Even though several of the political parties had received notifications of their omissions, it was all corrected in the time allotted.

The Chairman of the Central Voting Bureau Jason Rogers in explaining the process said that according to article 20 of the Electoral Ordinance all decisions taken by the Central Voting Bureau are by two thirds majority. He explained that with the endorsement of the political parties that took place on July 14, and according to law, the investigation of the list must be done within two days after it was completed by scrutinizing the list and the documents submitted.

During the investigation several omissions were committed by the various political parties and according to article 28 subsection 2 of the ordinance, the parties had to be notified immediately and were given the opportunity to correct the omissions by July 21. The United People’s (UP) Party, which was the first to submit their list to the Central Voting Bureau, was the only political party where everything was in order and as a result this was the only party that following the investigation there were no omissions. It was the only party where no notification needed to be sent since everything was in order.

All members of the Central Voting Bureau voted unanimously for the validity of the UP list, and it was voted as valid by the bureau; the placing of the 23 candidates were approved.

The second political party was the Social Reform Party, which was not able to submit the required amount of signatures initially, was later given an opportunity to rectify this situation.  As of Monday, however, they submitted the required amount of signatures. The list was determined valid since all members voted unanimously, even though there is only one candidate on the list, founder Jacinto Mock.

The omissions by the OSPP was that the addresses of the political candidates were not in order and a number of documents were missing and the picture that was submitted was not was in accordance with the law. The party was sent the notification and after their investigation they found that everything was in order. They also received a unanimous decision by the Central Voting Bureau.

With regard to the United St. Maarten party there were also some omissions since some documents were missing and the name of one candidate was incorrect on the candidate’s list. This was rectified and as a result the Central Voting Bureau had no problem and they received a unanimous vote from the members.

When the investigation was carried out on the Democratic Party a number of omissions were noted and that on postulation day the names of a number of candidates were incorrectly stated on the list. A number of documents were also missing. The party was notified and it was corrected and on their final investigation they found that everything is within the law. The Central Voting Bureau therefore voted unanimously for the validity of the list.

When the National Alliance presented their list there were also some omissions found where the names of some of the candidates were not stated correctly as stated on the list and the proof of the registration to the Electoral Council was not submitted to the Central Voting Bureau. The party was given a notification of these omissions and it was corrected and was unanimously approved by the Central Voting Bureau.

The Chairman of the Main Voting Bureau pointed out that if there are any eligible voters have any objections with the lists and the decisions that were taken by the Central Voting Bureau, according to Article 33, they have two days to file an appeal with the Court of First Instance.

The lists of the political candidates have been handed over to the Civil Registry where people are allowed peruse in the interest of transparency, concluded Rogers.
