Unions to table payment indexation on behalf of pensionersPOSTED: 07/26/11 11:55 AM
St. Maarten– First Vice-President of the Windward Islands Chamber of Labor Unions Claire Elshot says the Windward Islands Teachers Union, the Windward Islands Civil Servants Union/Private Sector Union and ABVO St. Maarten wants government to pay inactive civil servants and teachers their Cost of Living Adjustment. The non-payment affects pensioners covered by the Pension Fund of the Netherlands Antilles (APNA).
Elshot announced the intention to table the matter in a statement issued Monday to coincide with Day of the pensioners. She points out that APNA has requested that the Island Government of St. Maarten follow the lead of the Island Government of Curacao and paying for the indexation of the payments. Curacao being making those payments 10 years ago, but the government here still has not.
“We must acknowledge and respect the fact that the pensioners also live in the community with us and that the cost of living adjustment is also a must for them. There is jurisprudence on this issue with another government and the ABVO union, so we are hoping to get a solution on behalf of the pensioners who are former workers of the Island Government of St. Maarten,” Elshot stated in the release.
Elshot also announced on Monday that Robert Rawlins is representing the WITU and WICSU/PSU at the first Dutch Caribbean Seminar on Aging which opened on Monday evening at the University of Curacao (former University of the Netherlands Antilles).
