St. Maarten – The Windward Islands Chamber of Labor Unions is carefully studying a new policy with guidelines for employment agencies with an eye to suggesting potential amendments. Unions united Wiclu believe the agencies contribute to the infringement of the worker’s rights and that they should be structured.
“When it comes to workers we should ensure that their fundamental rights are secured.
Employers are using the employment agencies to circumvent some of the basic rights responsibilities of the workers. Employment agencies should not be used to minimize the rights of the workers and supply substitute workers for permanent workers. This is a practice which is currently being carried out by employers whenever they want to terminate permanent workers,” Wiclu’s 1st Vice-President Claire Elshot said.
The unions have noted that casinos are amongst the companies that are laying off permanent employees and getting temporary employees via employment agencies.
