Union Road opens to two lane traffic Friday

POSTED: 10/20/11 2:03 PM

St. Maarten – A decision was made Wednesday to make Union Road a two way street again as of Friday. This means the junction across from the SOL/Tackling gas station will be returned to its original situation.

Parties in the meeting also decided to keep the Alexis Arnell Road behind the former Cake House location a one way road for traffic heading to Cole Bay, but it will be forbidden for people to make a left turn onto Union Road. Parties have also decided that Orange Grove Road will remain a one way street.

The changes in the traffic situation will allow for a three week closure of the Cashew Tree Drive – the side road next to St. Martin Cars – so that Windward Roads can carry out upgrading works on the Welfare Road.

The parties at the meeting – Police Traffic Department, Control Unit, Windward Roads and the  Department of New Projects Development & Planning – have also decided that officers from the Traffic Control Unit will be present during the peak hours of the traffic congestion to help guide the traffic flow.
