Union criticizes Christmas-bonus discrimination

St. Maarten – Civil servants paid according to scale 6 and lower will receive their Christmas-bonuses by next Monday, Wiclu first vice president Claire Elshot said yesterday morning at the weekly press conference of the Windward Islands Chamber of Labor Unions.
But Elshot said that she objects to the way these bonuses are paid: active civil servants receive 345 guilders ($191.66), pensioner get just 125 guilders ($69.44). “It is time for the government to do away with this kind of discrimination. Pensioners are former workers, I strongly believe in equal treatment. Although this is a welcome gesture, this just is not fair.”
Elshot said that the discussion about the cost of living adjustment is still ongoing, though there is already an agreement for old age-pensioners. “For active civil servants there is no definite date yet. The word so far is: they are working on it.”
