St. Maarten – The Court in First Instance sentenced Rafael Newton, 36, to 12 months imprisonment for firearm possession yesterday. The defendant was caught with the gun on June 7, after he picked it up from a car in the airport parking lot. He had the gun in his pocket when he was arrested.
Defense attorney mr. G. Hatzmann said that his client had been detained already for 3.5 months and he wondered why it took so long for such a simple case to come to court. He asked the court for a sentence reduction, but Judge mr. M. Keppels did not comply, mainly because the defendant had the weapon in his pocket when he was arrested. The Judge sentenced Newton conform prosecutor mr. M.L.P. Ridderbeks’ demand to 12 months in jail.
