Tuitt to make decree to disregard billion in debts

St. Maarten – Minister of Finance Roland Tuitt will be moving to establish a policy to disregard outstanding taxes from 2006 and earlier, to give more credence to his decision. Those back taxes total 1.3 billion guilders, Tuitt said. His decision was already rendered in a letter to the Receivers to “park up” the old debts but Tuitt said that his advisors have indicated that in the event of a court case he will have a legal basis for his decision via a decree.

A law has already been drafted for the tax write-offs but it still needs to be sent to Parliament for approval.
