Tropical Storm Rafael rattles St. Maarten

POSTED: 10/15/12 4:16 PM

St. Maarten – Tropical storm Rafael rattled the island this weekend without causing large-scale damages. A building at the harbor saw some zinc sheets fly off the roof of a building, several streets saw more water than they could handle, but in the end, by noon yesterday afternoon the tropical storm warning was discontinued, though the island remained under a flash flood warning. Strong gusts of wind to near gale force could still be expected according to the Meteorological service in Curacao.

Seas were moderate to rough with waves reaching between 6 and 10 feet, the department of communication reported. Thunderstorms and continued rainfall – expected to amount to a total of 3 inches – kept roads in low lying areas at risk for flooding.
