St. Maarten – Representatives of the Tax Reform Workgroup led by Sissy Gonzalez-Fung met with a delegation from the Central  Bank of Curacao and St. Maarten (CBCS) last week Wednesday to brief them on the progress in developing a new tax system and to incorporate Tromp’ s input into the reform exercise

Tromp used the talks to stress the importance of tax policies which encourage the greater diversification of the economy and provide insights into inter-island trade issues and how tax policy should be appropriately sensitised to prevent unhelpful distortions of trade between the islands.

Tromp is “very supportive” of the underlying principles of the reform exercise which aim to simplify the tax system and broaden the tax base so that tax rates can be as low as possible in the long term. Parties have agreed to have follow-up meetings to continue discussions and get more input from the Central Bank.
