St. Maarten -This Saturday the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Council of Beacon Hill/Maho/Cupecoy will hold its first Get to Know Your Neighbor event at Sunset Beach Bar.

“By bringing everyone together we create stronger ties and from that, people start to look after one another more. Our aim is to have strong Neighborhood Watch programs eventually come out of this first step. The best way to create safer communities begins by knowing who your neighbours are and then developing those relationships,” Rebecca Low, president of the council said on Tuesday.

The council was created at the end of August as part of the police force’s community oriented policing initiative. The Council consists of community representatives, businesses and the American University of the Caribbean. Its mandate is to enhance the safety and security of individuals, families, businesses and visitors in the respective neighborhoods.

Board members are Rebecca Low (President), Dino Jagtiani (vice president) and Kathryn Behrisch (secretary). The council works in close collaboration with community police officer Major Joe Josepha to implement a variety of initiatives to improve safety. Two community meetings have been held to date at the American University.
