Today’s Editorial: Happy St. Maarten Carnival

St. Maarten Carnival 2011 is underway. Last night the official opening of the Carnival Village set the festive spring season in motion.

This is the time of the year for citizens to enjoy themselves in the way they know best.

At the same time, we all know that St. Maarten Carnival has too often been the stage to settle old scores.

Will this year be different? There seems to be a change in the air, something we also refer to on our opinion page today. People are totally fed up with crime and violence and they want it to stop.

Carnival is then a wonderful occasion to give practical value to that sentiment, by not tolerating wayward behavior, by focusing on true Caribbean style celebrations.

After all the murders and robberies that have plagued our island in recent months it’s time to turn the page, to turn away from the dark side and to move towards the light.

Happy Carnival to all our readers.

Oh, before we forget: remember the ear plugs for you and your children?
