St. Maarten – Reigning Teen Carnival Queen D’Shnay Mathew York added another crown by winning the Haynes Smith Talent Teen Caribbean Pageant in St. Kitts on Tuesday night. Mathew-York narrowly beat out the representative from St. Kitts to bring a Caribbean crown home to St. Maarten for the first time in more than a decade.

Her participation in this pageant drew significant attention from the local population via social media. Her photo on the pageant’s Facebook page drew the most “likes” with over 1,200 and several people used a pay-per-view option to view the pageant online. Former Mature Queen Paula Gordon also arranged for the pageant to be screened at her Roof Top Bar location.

Mathew-York, whose preparations started right after she was crowned St. Maarten’s Carnival Teen Queen in April, won two key segments in St. Kitts, the talent segment and the interview segment. Her talent was a skit focused on bullying and its negative effects. She regionalized the performance and drew wide praise for it in St. Kitts.

When she was announced as queen Facebook was abuzz with congratulatory posts from all angles. The call went out via the Facebook page of the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) for everyone to gather at the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM Airport) the following day to welcome her home.

The teen queen arrived on Winair (one of her sponsors) at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning and was welcomed with steelpan music, by current and former carnival queens, current runner-ups, family, friends and representatives of the SCDF.

The festive welcome was coordinated by the airport that also sponsored Mathew-York for her carnival pageant and who swung into action to put everything in place the day before. Every queen the airport sponsored over the past two years, has won a crown.

Mathew-York  said that pageant was a wonderful experience where she made new friends and above all proudly represented her island. She said that when she is called upon to represent St. Maarten, be it in a pageant or otherwise, she will do so. “I want to thank everyone who supported me whether it was financially, sponsored my clothes, or gave words of encouragement. A special shout out goes to my team.”.

That team consisted of her trainer and uncle Francis “Catwalk Professor” Mathew, her mom Maggie Mathew, her stylist Ketty Courage, SCDF pageant coordinator Aishira Cicilia and many others.

“We are proud to see yet another carnival queen do so well in a regional pageant. We are very, very proud of D’Shnay who seems determined to win every pageant in which she participates. All credit goes to her dynamic team of her mom Maggie and uncle Francis for their tireless work in making sure she stays grounded but ready to compete and win. Their dedication is unmatched. Knowing this team, we are sure we will be seeing a lot more of D’Shnay in pageants. She is truly a special talent and a special young lady,” SCDF President Mike Granger said.

SCDF Queens have had quite a winning streak in 2014 with its former Senior Queen Davinis Brooks winning first runner-up in the PJD2 Caribbean Queen Pageant, it’s Junior Queen Laetitia Cozier winning a crown in Santo Domingo and now its Teen Queen winning another crown in St. Kitts.
