Team Gym Fit set to defend relay title

St. Maarten – When the 25th Around the Island relay kicks off this coming Sunday, the Gym Fit team from the French side of the island will be seeking to repeat last year’s performance and keep the coveted title.

On that occasion, Gym Fit, who completed the course in a time of 1hour 59 minutes and 36 seconds defeated Team Coors Light whose last runner crossed the line with a time of 2 .01. 19 and occupying the number three spot was Watt De Neuf, also from the French side in 2.02.45.

Because of the counter clockwise course this year, the conditions can pose a not so serious challenge especially to the all female starting lineup and that aspect too is another first in the 25 year history of the relay.

So far, a little over 50 teams have registered and that figured has surpassed the 2011 entry. But with more teams, the St Maarten Road Runners, the organizers of the race will need more volunteers along the course.

Over the past few months, several teams have been intensifying their preparations for this highly anticipated event and among them is a Daily Herald team, a City Pharmacy team, Nagico team, Dynamics Track Club and a VKS team just to name a few.

However, there will also be some keen competition in the youth category which is usually dominated by athletes from Anguilla who are yet to be upstaged. The veterans in the 50 and over are also expected to make their presence felt along with the memory of Malcolm Maidwell, the founder of the race.
