St. Maarten – Elementary school teachers and caregivers will converge at the Westin Dawn Beach Resort and Spa for the first Teachers’ Summit under the auspices of new Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth Affairs Silveria Jacobs. The summit has been slated for June 25 and will give educators a chance to express themselves freely on matters relating to educational reform, their working conditions and challenges faced daily.
This is one of the initiatives Jacobs announced in her first few days in office. Just a few weeks ago she emphasized the importance of hearing from personnel before making any drastic decisions on teacher absenteeism, for example, after meeting with the Windward Islands Teachers Union (Witu). On Wednesday Jacobs was quick to point out that school managers and members of school boards will not be allowed to attend the summit.
“Schools have been informed that it is solely for teachers as well as care team members. We will be meeting with school managers and school boards on a separate date,” Jacobs stressed.
Herself an educator for years, the minister said that more information could be gleaned if she spoke with the teachers on a one on one basis.
A committee was recently installed to actively work towards the realization of this year’s Teachers Summit. It is expected to become an annual event.
Thus far, all teachers have been informed of their mandatory participation in the event and were also asked to submit suggestions or their opinions for the effective planning and execution of the caucus.
“I would like to encourage all teachers to send in advance what they think the challenges are so that we are better able to plan and set up the summit in such a way that we use the time there more effectively and efficiently,” the minister said.
A summit for secondary school teachers is expected to follow soon after. The tentative period of the first week in August, before the new school year begins, has been identified for the hosting of the event.
