POSTED: 07/6/14 7:00 PM

St. Maarten – A high speed police chase ensued yesterday morning around 10 am after a driver in a darkly tinted white Nissan Almera, with license plate 5184 AAB, refused to stop when asked by police. The patrol was at the crossing of Zagers Gut Road and Bush Road, the police said in a report.

The patrol ordered the driver to stop in order to carry out a routine traffic control; however, the driver did the opposite and increased the speed of the car in order to get away from the police.

A high speed chase then followed through the areas of Mary’s Fancy, Saunders, Ebenezer, South Reward, and Over the Pond area. During the chase the driver of the suspect vehicle collided with several other vehicles, and did not stop, but continued fleeing. On the A. Th. Illidge road in the vicinity of AKI Supermarket the suspect collided with a vehicle causing extensive damage. As a result of the impact the suspect’s car could not continue.

The suspect then jumped out of the vehicle and ran towards the hills. Several other police patrols came to the scene to assist in finding the suspect. During this incident the A. Th. Illidge road was closed-off and traffic was diverted to allow the police traffic department to conduct their investigation.

The entire area was searched, but the suspect was not found.  The traffic department has located at least eight vehicles that were damaged by the fleeing suspect’s vehicle. The investigation is still ongoing, police reported.
