GREAT BAY- The St.Maarten United Non-governmental Federation (Sunfed) officially inaugurated its new headquarters with a lecture put on by the St.Maarten Senior Citizens and Pensioners Association on Wednesday night. The building is located on Back Street within close proximity of The Mailbox. It houses a conference room, computer center and offices which can be used by other social organizations for a minimal fee.
Sunfed chairman Alberto Bute tearfully reflected on the struggles the organization faced before achieving the milestone of establishing its headquarters. “For the past six years, Turning Point was the only place where we found refuge,” Bute said. He thanked Turning Point, Sunfed’s board members and numerous volunteers for supporting the organization’s vision.
He urged those gathered to keep the organization close to their hearts and expand their wings
“Our island has not been paying keen attention to social development in general. Funding is and will remain a problem for coming years. We need to get ourselves organized,” Bute said.
In this regard, one of the first things that needed to put in place was the headquarters from which the organization would function and lend support to other agencies, Bute explained. “This office here is yours not the board’s only. Make use of our conference room; small but accommodating. Don’t see Sunfed as separate from you, you are Sunfed.
Since its establishment in Philipsburg, Sunfed has connected with its neighbors, especially the boys on the block in the area. “You can’t go into a neighborhood and don’t get to know the people. If you come into the district, we need to work with the people and we will get the best out of them,” Bute appealed.
The organization also plans to make the building more user friendly for the elderly and the disabled.
