Strong interest in coaching days at the Yacht Club

GREAT BAY – The Sint Maarten Yacht Club reported that a series of coaching days, held on Saturday afternoons , has attracted very strong interest and has led to a significant boost in small boat sailing activity . On Saturday 22nd September the coaching group consisted of 10 Lasers, 3 Visions, 9 Optimists and 6 Jeanneau 20’s. An estimated 46 persons enjoyed light winds and close racing with the emphasis on skill development and learning. The Jeanneau 20’s were coached by international sailor Andrea Scarabelli and the Lasers by youth instructor Martin.

Participation in the Jeanneau 20’s has been limited to persons who have not yet achieved highly in this class so that they would not be put off by the high pressure tactics that inevitably are found when the advanced sailors go head to head in the “significant” events that are held in Sint
Maarten in this class . Nevertheless the fleet got increasingly close as the day went on and the quality of racing improved.

The Optimist fleet was divided into a Gold and Silver fleet to make it possible for all to get around the course easily.

Racing has been taking part on the Southern part of the lagoon where at this time of the year there is plentiful space. Whilst this is convenient and close by it is also the location where the wind shifts are the greatest when the wind is from an Easterly direction.

The off season (May to November) generally has lighter winds which gives a great opportunity for learning sailors to develop skills which is more difficult once the seasons trade winds set in that create more challenging conditions. Hence the focus of the yacht club to run this series. In
November the club will host the “Sint Maarten’s Day Series” which will see a regular series for prizes and published results take place. This series will cover the same classes that are presently being sailed. Optimist sailors are also preparing for the Sol Optimist Sint Maarten Championship to be held on 10th November 2012

This upcoming Saturday another coaching and racing event will take place. It is open to all small sailing boats. Departure from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Dock is at 2 p.m.
