ORANJESTAD – Last Friday the first official fish aggregation device was placed offshore of Statia.

The equipment attracts various types of fish like tuna, wahoo, dolphin and billfish. A representative of the department of fisheries of Dominica, Mr. Jullan Defoe, and fisherman Caret Bertley from Dominica helped to design and construct the equipment. Deployment was done by the NUSTAR vessel “Statia Responder” some 8 miles offshore in deep water.

“We want to upgrade the fishing sector and this is a first step in that direction,” said Roberto Hensen from the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. “It is a more efficient way of fishing as it saves the fishers a lot of fuel otherwise needed for trawling up and down the coastline”.

This new incentive is seen as an experiment and if successful others will follow. The project is collaboration between Statia’s department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the ministry of Economic Affairs and the development bank OBNA.
