St. Maarten – The suspect in involved in the major fight that took place on July 5, is still in police custody. On Monday, the suspect appeared in the Court in First Instance and the public prosecutor requested a 60 day pre-trial detention for the office to continue its investigation. The other man involved in the fight, Miguel Garcia, died overseas. He was flown to Santo Domingo for surgery but the doctors there were not able to save him. Two women who attacked the pregnant girlfriend of the victim were also arrested but they were recently released from jail.
The stabbing incident took place on the A.Th. Illidge Road in the vicinity of A&A Supply just before noon on Sunday July 5. According to the police report, the “suspect” in this case also was stabbed in his shoulder and was arrested after receiving treatment at medical center. He was taken to the Philipsburg police station where he remains in custody. The pregnant wife of the suspect “also got caught up in this fight” and was beaten by two other women.
Press Public Prosecutor Karola van Nie confirmed the release of the woman and said that the investigation is still ongoing. “We asked Monday morning to prolong his detention with another 60 days and await the decision of the Judge of Instruction. The two women are not in custody, but no further decision has been taken in their case yet,” Van Nie said.
