CONCORDIA—Vice President of the Collectivité Guillaume Jacques Arnel received the prestigious Medal of Merit from the President of the Republic of France. He was pinned with the medal by Prefét Philippe Chopin at a ceremony held at the Chamber of Commerce in Concordia on Thursday evening.

In his comment on the occasion he said that he “was extremely grateful and happy” to be the recipient of this medal and mentioned that this is “something that you do not ask for but it is bestowed on you.” He pointed out that this means that someone has to recommend that you receive the medal which was the case of his mother before him.

He has expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Overseas Department Victorin Laurel who he later learnt had recommended him for such an honor. “I will do my utmost best in continuing to serve the people in the manner that I have done in the past,” said Arnel.

His mother who has been a nurse for more than four decades was also honored and is a recipient of the same medal for her dedication to the people of St. Martin as a nurse. She said that she was also very happy that her son had received the medal and wished him much success in the future.

During the entire ceremony, conducted in  French, he was given many accolades by Prefét Chopin and his sister who read the congratulatory messages from the well wishers. He spoke of the many people who he had become close friends with while growing up and who were responsible for the successes he enjoyed.
