St. Maarten – Traffic flowing in the back road in Grand Case came to an abrupt stop to facilitate the first parade marking the start of the carnival festivities on the French side yesterday afternoon, and President of the Festivities Carnavalasques de Saint Martin, Philips Richards, is anticipating a series of grand events.

The parade included four of the five ladies that will be competing in the Miss Elegant Plus Size along with scores of carnival revelers, some dressed especially for the occasion tramped from the airport intersection to the basketball court at the end of Grand Case.

“It is certainly going to be better this year because as the slogan said, “We Ready For Mas Again and so far things are looking pretty good. Trust me, when people see the Grand Parade in which 12 troops will be competing this year, history will be made because some of those troupes will have in the vicinity of 200 persons,” Richards said.

In response to the question on private sector involvement, Richards said that once again he will be taking of his cap to the members of the Indian community who have been very supportive of the festivities over the years.

“We are urging the various businesses to dress up their show cases and some of them are calling us now. But if the Europeans and the Chinese should do the same thing as the Indians that have businesses on this side of the island, I think that we will go forward.”

The next warm up parade is set for next Sunday and Richards has predicted that it will be bigger than the first.
