St. Maarten/St. Martin makes regional top five

GREAT BAY – St. Maarten/St. Martin has been ranked the fifth best destination in the Caribbean in www.tripadvisor.com’s Traveller’s Choice Awards Top 25 in the Caribbean and Mexico. The placement is based on votes by visitors who lauded the island for its duality and for the diversity of activities offered and the protected nature on the island.

The actual citation on Trip Advisor’s website states, “Get the experience of visiting two island colonies in the same 37 square miles. Saint Maarten/Saint Martin’s spicy marriage of Caribbean, French and Dutch cultures matches its physical diversity: the island is both urban and untamed, with rain forest-like landscapes, white beaches, and amazing caves and wildlife.”

The region’s number one destination in 2011 – Grand Cayman – was the only Caribbean island to make the top 25 destinations in the world. It holds the number 22 spot on that list.

The top five for the region is rounded out by Aruba in the number spot, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in third and Bermuda as number four.

Curacao was the only other Dutch Caribbean island to make the Caribbean top 25, having been voted into the number 22 spot.

Other honors

Saba’s Queen’s Garden and Hotel L ‘Esplanade made the list of top 25 hotels in the region. They were ranked 12th and 19th respectively.

Aruba was the only Dutch Caribbean Island that got a nod for its family experience. They are number 10 in the Best Family Vacations in the Caribbean and Mexico category. The specific honor went to Palm/Eagle Beach which is also ranked third the world in the Best Beaches Category.
