St. Maarten’s utility provider G.E.B.E loses power twice

POSTED: 09/5/13 2:05 PM

St. Maarten – Yesterday Gebe lost its electricity twice during the day, leaving several parts of the island in the dark.

The first occurred in the morning at approximately 9.50 a.m. when a stress cone in the high tension cable connection gave way and caused a flash over. The power was restored to all areas by 3 p.m., a statement from Gebe said.

A second power loss happened minutes after Gebe brought back its power at 3.30 p.m. when a short in one of the feeder cables feeding the substation in Zagersgut occurred. This resulted in the loss of electricity as well. Gebe said that technicians isolated the fault but were still busy at 5:30 p.m. restoring the grid.

Gebe said in a statement to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
