St. Maarten’s Prosecutor’s office eyed new electronic supervision systemPOSTED: 06/26/13 12:16 PM
St. Maarten – The Public Prosecutor’s Office contacted in 2012 a company that is specialized in locating people via a global positioning system and set up a presentation for Justice Minister Duncan. The system is one of the alternatives to battle the shortage of prison cells, the prosecutor’s office writes in its 2012 annual report.
“This company is capable of delivering and advanced electronic supervision system against acceptable investment and operating costs,” the report states.
“Purchasing such a system could give the classic electronic supervision a new impulse,” the report states. Suspects could also be equipped with an ankle bracelet during their preventive custody. This way they are limited in their freedom of movement but they are able to keep their, often so important job.”
The Justice Ministry has not taken a decision yet about purchasing the system.
