St. Maarten – Chief Operations Officer of the Bureau Telecommunications & Post Giovanni King expects that telecom providers will begin broadcasting the St. Maarten’s new country code +1-721 by the end of July. At the moment people still see +599 when they receive a call.
The move to have telecom providers broadcast the new dialing code is part of the full transition to the North American Numbering Plan that should be completed by October 30. Efforts under this project began with the launch of the new code (+1-721) on September 30, 2011. The project took another major leap forward on March 1 when Scarlet, Antelecom (UTS) and Smitcoms introduced new carrier select codes. The codes are 0-123, 0-125 and 0-144 respectively.

Bureau Telecommunications and Post has also secured certification under from SMS/800, which is responsible for issuing 1-800 numbers under the North American Numbering Plan. The bureau has also drafted a new numbering plan that has been put out for two months of consultation before the final advice is presented to the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunication. Telecom companies have also been provided with vertical service codes and private short codes to ensure they can continue to connect calls.
The bureau also made sure in recent times that they harmonized codes like N11 and got rid of 555 numbers as this latter prefix conflicted with another jurisdiction that falls under the North American Numbering Plan.
