St. Maarten – The country’s Indian community will celebrate their country’s 63rd anniversary of independence with a ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Belair Community Centre. Vice President of the Indian Merchants Association (Ima) Peter Mirpuri says the event will highlight the national pride of Indians, how they have integrated into St. Maarten’s society and their contributions in trade and commerce, technology, education, manufacturing and civil rights.
“The Ima will not be making any special announcements but will continue its program to recognize individuals and organizations that perform outstanding community service,” Mirpuri said.
Saturday night’s program will combine presentations on the history of the country and a traditional cultural show by young people.
India obtained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947 but its constitution was not enacted until November 26, 1949 and did come into effect until 1950.
