GREAT BAY – The St. Maarten Zoo needs help to get a new pickup truck. According to a statement the management and staff have been quietly trying to find money to buy one after the old one was stolen several months ago. Shortly after that the vehicle was found completely stripped.

The truck is a key part of the Zoo’s operations as staffers use it to haul away tree branches and garbage and to pick up food for the animals that is donated by local supermarkets. At the moment the Zoo staff is using a car to get the food and what was once done in one trip is taking two or three.

“It is extremely difficult for us to be without a pickup and we are asking if anyone has a small pickup in decent working condition that they could donate to the Zoo. We have always had good support from the community, and we are asking for that support once again. The Zoo is in a tight financial situation and we just do not have extra funds to purchase a truck on our own,” the Zoo’s Public Relations Officer Barbara Cannegieter wrote in a press release.

People who wish to help can call the Zoo at (+599) 543-2030 and ask for Gene. They can also call (+599) 588-0777.
