St. Maarten – Els O’Connor – a former school teacher here – donated $500 to the St. Maarten Zoo recently. The money was collected during her 75th birthday party. O’Connor asked party guests to bring money instead of buying gifts.
“At my age I have everything I need and I think this is a different and more meaningful way to celebrate my birthday. I hope other people will also adopt the idea of contributing to worthy charities on their birthdays,” O’Connor said.

The retired teacher, who presented the money in the presence of her family, requested that the money be used to upgrade and repair the Cotton Top Tamarin exhibit.
“The St. Maarten Zoo is deeply appreciative of this donation. We thank Mrs. O’Connor for her thoughtfulness. The Cotton Top Tamarin exhibit is one of our more important exhibits as these animals are highly endangered. We are pleased to have some funds to improve their exhibit,” a release from the zoo’s Public Relations Officer said.
