St. Maarten welcomes 2013

GREAT BAY / MARIGOT – St. Maarten welcomed 2013 with a spectacular show of fireworks in Great Bay. The show was not organized by the government, but by the Harbor group of Companies, supported by Holland House, Volker Stevin Caribbean (the contractor that is building the causeway across the Simpson Bay Lagoon) and telecom provider TelCell.

The fireworks in Philipsburg stood out compared to events in Marigot and, across the water, in Anguilla. The Collectivité d’Outre Mer (COM) de Saint Martin had not organized anything, and the fireworks the Beach Plaza Hotel had prepared for its guests failed to ignite.
The box with firecrackers sat idly on the small pier the hotel has built in the sea behind its terrace. Last year Beach Plaza visitors enjoyed fireworks that lit up all over neighboring Anguilla, at Porto Cupecoy, and at Maho, this year they had to make do with the Maho fireworks. Across the water in Anguilla, where last year fireworks lit the skies from at least eight different locations, there were only two locations visible this year, and the show over there was also quickly over.
