St. Maarten – The long awaited St. Maarten Tourism Authority (STA) will soon be established now that the government is awaiting the mandatory advices of the Committee on Financial Supervision (CFT) and the Corporate Governance Council (CGC), Tourism Minister Romeo Pantophlet said yesterday.

The authority will be modeled after the existing one in Aruba, but will have the legal form of an N.V.

“This is to do away with the bureaucracy and red tape, in an NV form you can make managerial decisions today and they are carried out today so we would not be plagued anymore with late contracts,” Minister Pantophlet explained.

The STA will consist of 9 board members, as shareholder, government will appoint a director and deputy director and the additional board members will come from various professional fields.

Small hotelier and the taxi association representatives will also be placed on the board based on a recommendation that the minister made.

Interviews will begin next week with civil servants for the staffing of the STA and the entire budget of the tourist office will be transferred to the tourism authority.

“The government will have a hands off approach,” Minister Pantophlet said.
