St. Maarten Telecom companies get indirect relief from regulator

St. Maarten – Director of Bureau Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten Peggy Ann Brandon confirmed recently that the regulator is giving telephone companies indirect relief on the fees they pay. The relief stems from the fact that the companies themselves will not have to pay for the elements of the transition to a new dialing code (1-721).
“We created a budget that involved some of the expenses that operators would have had to cover and because of that yes they are getting a break on the fees. Technically it’s a direct break but since we have made a budget for the project, there will be some relief on what they would have had to contribute,” Brandon said.

Questions about the relief came up after the Chief Financial Officer of Telem Group Helma Etnel and Chief Executive Officer of United Telecommunications Services Glen Carty told this newspaper they’d requested give them relief because of the cost incurred in preparing their networks for the process of switching from 599 to 1-721 as the dialing code.
