St. Maarten – The New Year did not begin well for several tourists who were walking on the Board walk at five o’clock in the morning of January 1, though their mishap ended with the arrest of five armed robbers and the recovery of stolen goods.

The tourists were robbed by two men under threat with a firearm of cell phones, jewelry, cameras and other personal possessions.

Police officers started searching the area after the tourists reported the robbery. “With the help and information from our good members of the community they managed to located and surround one of the suspects on the premises of the Oranje School on Front Street,’ the police reported in a press release.

When officers ordered the suspect to come out of his hiding place he opted to draw his gun instead. One of the officers shot the suspect in the left leg, after which he surrendered.

The man, T.M. from Anguilla, still had the stolen goods in his possession. They were confiscated together with the firearm.

The suspect was first taken to the St. Maarten Medical center for treatment and then to the police station where he is now in custody. The investigation led to the arrest of four other Anguilleans who kept stolen items in their hotel rooms.
