“My late husband was adamant about avoiding conflicts of interest”

St. Maarten – Ombudsman Nilda Arduin will not assume the directorship of her late husband Edgar Lynch’s real estate company Arlyn Consultancy. “But I cannot abdicate from my role as the caretaker of his estate,” she said yesterday.

Arduin said that she was bombarded with questions upon her return from a business trip to Vienna about her intention to leave office for a year to take care of her late husband’s affairs. “That is a gross misinterpretation of the letter I sent to the Parliament,” she said.

Arduin said that the Ombudsman legislation states that the ombudsman is not allowed to accept side jobs that may compromise impartiality. “The law provides the possibility to assume side jobs and I intended to assume the directorship of Arlyn Consultancy.”

Arduin said that her husband passed away unexpectedly on March 28. “I am the caretaker of his estate and this is what I intend to do. I informed the Parliament accordingly. However, considering my husband’s legacy – he was adamant about avoiding conflicts of interest – I will not assume that directorship.”
